Energy-efficient RDF production for cement plant with UNTHA

10 Dec 2025  |
CEMEX Colombia is increasing sustainability in the construction industry and producing high-quality substitute fuels with an UNTHA shredder.

Up to 15 tons per hour of commercial, industrial, and bulky waste, as well as tires and mattresses, are shredded at the company and thermally recycled as RDF in the main burner and calciner. The energy obtained is used to produce cement, concrete, and other materials for the construction industry.

Requirements:

  • Single-stage shredding process
  • Processing of different, heterogeneous material streams
  • Production of different RDF qualities
  • Low energy consumption / OPEX below €5/t
  • High availability for smooth processes

The company opted for the UNTHA XR3000C, which processes a wide range of materials: a fully electric single-shaft shredder whose C- cutting system produces a homogeneous output material with a grain size of 45–130 mm. Interchangeable perforated screens enable the production of different EBS qualities, ensuring optimal energy yield. Low-maintenance and user-friendly operation minimizes downtime and ensures reliable 24/7 operation. Approximately 2,000 tons of material are shredded per month.

Miguel Rocha, Portfolio Manager at CEMEX Colombia, on the performance of the XR:

“The shredded material is used as an alternative fuel in our cement kilns, replacing coal as the main fuel and significantly reducing our carbon footprint. This measure prevents thousands of tons of waste from going to landfill, gives the materials a new purpose, and promotes more sustainable solutions in the construction sector.”
