Brij Mohan Garg founded the company 40 years ago as a metal trading business. Today, it’s managed by his sons Rakesh and Manish. Under their leadership, HUDEI has become a specialist in metal recycling, especially for stainless steel, and is seen as a model across India for this emerging sector.
A family-owned company with vision
“Our dad laid the foundations for the company, but it was my brother Rakesh’s idea to drive the recycling business forward that took us to a whole new level,” explains younger brother Manish Garg. “We are seeing sustainability become more and more important in India, not least as a result of stricter environmental regulations and peoples’ increasing awareness. Recycling metals enables us both to significantly reduce carbon emissions and to ensure a cleaner environment – something that’s very close to our family’s heart.” Today, HUDEI produces 60,000 metric tons of stainless steel per year and has long built a reputation for itself from its consistent focus on sustainability. Technology for the market of the future
In response to increasing quality requirements and growing environmental awareness, HUDEI installed an ultra-modern sorting facility equipped with STEINERT technology in 2023. The aim of the investment was to equip the company for future requirements and, at the same time, to make it a role model for other Indian recyclers. “We wanted a technology partner who shares our vision and who we can rely on,” says Rakesh Garg. “STEINERT offers the best sorting solutions, which is why they dominate the market here. Their products last a long time and are highly precise yet easy to operate. That’s exactly what the Indian market needs to fully exploit the potential of recycling.”
The STEINERT ISS sensor-based sorting system lies at the heart of the new stainless steel sorting facility. It uses induction technology to separate metals with high efficiency. Any conductive object passing through the sensor area is detected at a sensitivity of significantly less than 1 mm. This means that impurities in the stainless steel can be reduced to a minimum and pure-grade products can be obtained. “This improved quality not only opens up better sales opportunities on the domestic market, it also makes us more attractive to international customers,” explains Manish Garg.
Collaboration and transfer of expertise
Having close collaboration with the team on site was of paramount importance to HUDEI alongside the technical capability of the STEINERT systems. “We didn’t just want to buy a machine, we wanted to understand the expertise behind it,” Manish emphasises. “STEINERT was by our side in every phase of the project – from the first test runs right up to the fine tuning of the sorting programs. Without this close partnership, we wouldn’t have been able to implement our project as quickly and smoothly as we have.”
Pioneering for India’s recycling sector
HUDEI is setting a clear signal for the future of the recycling sector in India with the new stainless steel sorting facility. As a successful family business, the Garg brothers are proving that tradition, sustainability and ultra-modern technology complement one another perfectly. STEINERT views this partnership as a milestone that will also inspire other Indian metal recyclers.
“Our goal is for more companies to discover the benefits of our sorting solutions and to use them to open up new markets and opportunities,” says Abhishek Mukherjee, Head of Sales India at STEINERT: “HUDEI is an impressive example of how a company can use innovative technology and vision to become a pioneer in a growing sector.”
Quality as a mantra for the future
At HUDEI, they are looking to the future with confidence and ambition. Even after the Garg brothers, HUDEI will continue to be a driving force in the Indian recycling industry – strengthened by its successful collaboration with STEINERT and driven by the shared vision of creating a sustainable value-added chain that benefits the country and its environment.
“At the end of the day, the environment, our customers and us all stand to gain from this,” Manish Garg sums up and quotes the major Indian industrial businessman Ratan Tata: “As soon as you offer excellent quality, you get customers’ attention.” “That’s our mantra for success and, thanks to STEINERT, we’re on the right path.”
