Drycake: Twister

Drycake develops and manufactures the Twister, a vertical dry depackaging and separation system designed to process packaged waste into separate organic and packaging fractions. Developed from more than a decade of operational experience across multiple waste streams, the technology is based on a simple objective: separate materials while preserving their characteristics for downstream use.

How does it work? A controlled vortex and mechanical lifting action release organic content from the packaging while limiting changes to the packaging material’s physical structure. As a result, both output streams remain suitable for defined downstream applications.

Organic Fraction

The organic fraction can be directed to anaerobic digestion and composting processes. Because the separation process does not rely on shredding or wet pulping, contamination levels are reduced compared to many conventional depackaging methods. This supports biogas production, digestate quality, and compliance with site specific operating requirements.

Packaging Fraction

The packaging fraction exits the process as a dry material stream with limited organic carryover. By separating rather than size reducing the material, the Twister retains the structure and energy content of films, flexibles, and rigid packaging. For wet feedstocks such as pulper rejects, the Twister consistently delivered an output dryness of 75% or above, with results varying by feed moisture and material composition. Under optimised operating conditions with integrated low-grade heat, output dryness approaching 90% has been recorded.

The resulting material can be directed toward Solid Recovered Fuel applications, energy recovery systems, or plastics recycling processes, depending on local market requirements and material composition.

Universal Application
One Input. Two Revenue Streams.

The Twister produces two output streams with defined downstream pathways. The organic fraction supports biological treatment processes, while the packaging fraction can be utilized for energy recovery or material recycling. This approach enables operators to recover value from waste streams that are often managed as disposal costs.

The separation process combines density-based behaviour with aerodynamic and mechanical forces, allowing the system to process wet, contaminated, and variable feedstocks without extensive preconditioning.
