Fibersort®: Automated Textile Sorting for High-Quality Recycling Feedstock

October 12, 2026  |
Fibersort® is a fully automated textile sorting system developed by Valvan to support the growing demand for high-quality feedstock in textile-to-textile recycling processes. By combining advanced Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) with AI-driven recognition models, Fibersort® accurately identifies the fibre composition of post-consumer garments and automatically sorts them into predefined fractions.

Unlike conventional bulk sorting methods, Fibersort® processes garments individually. Each item is singulated before scanning, preventing overlap and ensuring maximum recognition accuracy. The system can identify both pure fibres and blended materials, enabling recyclers to create consistent output streams that meet the requirements of modern recycling technologies.

Additional sensor technologies allow Fibersort® to sort textiles based on colour, structure, weight, metal content and embedded tags. This flexibility makes the system suitable for a wide range of textile recycling applications and material flows.

At the heart of the installation is the modular Fibersort® Core. The system can be configured according to available floor space, throughput requirements and operational preferences. Feeding can be done manually by operators or fully automated using robotic picking technology. Multiple sorting cores can be connected to increase capacity while maintaining the same level of sorting precision. A single Fibersort® Core can process up to 8,000 tonnes of textiles per year.

Designed for industrial operation, Fibersort® includes automatic hourly calibration, real-time analytics and intuitive operator dashboards. Precision scanning from below, combined with a broad NIR spectral range, ensures reliable identification and stable performance under varying operating conditions.

By transforming unsorted post-consumer textiles into clean and traceable material streams, Fibersort® helps recyclers improve feedstock quality, increase operational efficiency and support the transition towards a circular textile economy.
