Laminex was founded more than 90 years ago in a small tin shed near Melbourne (Australia). Initially, the company only produced decorative laminates. Since then, the product range has expanded considerably to include laminated products for interior design, such as doors, drawers, covers, wall panels and shelving.

The main production site in Ballarat, Victoria, generates tons of production waste and scrap in the form of treated and untreated chipboard and MDF. The disposal of this waste is extremely time-consuming and costly. A better solution was therefore sought, as Laminex is committed to making production more sustainable.

Australian partner for Australian customers

Laminex is particularly proud of its Australian roots and was therefore keen to partner with a local dealer when looking for a shredder. Laminex finally found the right partner in Jonathan Tan from CEMAC Technologies, the long-standing Australian dealer for WEIMA machinery. After a demonstration of the shredders in the showroom in Melbourne, production manager Stuart Manford and his team were convinced: a WEIMA WLK 2000 single-shaft shredder would solve the disposal problem in Ballarat. The deciding factors were the quality of the machine, its user-friendliness and the powerful drive.

WEIMA WLK 2000: Continuously in operation

The wood waste is collected by the employees in two bins and then fed into the shredder via the large hopper (2,000 x 1,890 mm).

The free-cutting design of the hopper is particularly suitable for handling large, bulky boards and effectively prevents disruptive material bridging. This ensures continuous operation of the shredder.

Robust and high-throughput wood shredding

The WLK 2000 wood shredder is driven by an electromechanical drive with WEIMA WAP gearbox. This has been specially designed for shredding operation and is particularly easy to maintain and insensitive to foreign objects. The generous belt cut-out allows easy integration of conveyor technology, as is the case with Laminex: the wood chips are discharged cleanly and efficiently into a collection container via a conveyor belt.

The shredder was selected with a focus on the growing production volume. A throughput of up to six tons of wood waste per hour is possible with the WLK 2000 – significantly more than what Laminex currently requires.

In future, the wood chips will be used by a local brick manufacturer to fire the kiln. This way, the leftover wood can be used sustainably instead of ending up in a landfill site.

CEMAC and WEIMA – a long-standing partnership

Stuart Manford is fully satisfied with the service provided by CEMAC and WEIMA: “We recently had a visit from a WEIMA technician from Germany. He inspected the installation and took a lot of time to answer our questions.”
