BAS Launches Furnace Magnet to Remove Iron from Aluminium Melting Furnaces Before It Dissolves

BAS, a Turkish manufacturer of magnetic separation and mineral processing equipment, has introduced the BAS Furnace Magnet, a high-temperature electromagnetic separator designed to remove iron and steel pieces from aluminium melting furnaces in a safe and controlled way.

Electromagnetic separator with continuous coil temperature monitoring targets secondary aluminium smelters and foundries

Iron is one of the most harmful impurities in aluminium alloys. Steel parts that enter the furnace with scrap — bolts, rivets, inserts and fragments of tools — gradually dissolve in the molten aluminium and raise its iron content. Once dissolved, iron is slow and costly to remove; in practice it is usually diluted with primary aluminium or the metal is downgraded to less demanding applications. Removing iron pieces while they are still solid is therefore the most effective way to protect melt quality.

The BAS Furnace Magnet is lowered over the bath and energised to create a strong magnetic field that holds ferromagnetic pieces inside the furnace. The magnet is then lifted out together with the collected metal, and the pieces are released in a controlled manner when the power is switched off.

Because the equipment works inside the furnace, BAS designed it around body durability and coil safety as much as magnetic force:

  • High-temperature body made of special steel selected for long service life against heat, impact and surface wear.
  • Continuous coil temperature monitoring — the winding temperature can be followed remotely and is displayed on the control panel.
  • Electronic protection that responds to coil temperature, minimising the risk of overheating and coil burnout during intensive production.

The Furnace Magnet is aimed at secondary (recycled) aluminium smelters, aluminium foundries for die, gravity and sand casting, and the melting and casting lines of extrusion plants and rolling mills.

The Furnace Magnet complements BAS’s range of overband magnets and eddy current separators, which remove ferrous metal from scrap and recover aluminium before it reaches the furnace.
